Reach Out is a handmade ceramic vase, coil built with a deep red terracotta clay. It is then washed with a white underglaze translucent enough that the warm earthy colour of the natural clay can still be seen. The application method along with a high temp firing creates a unique texture to the surface leaving a natural and delicate finish
The illustration is created using a technique referred to as sgraffito. This involves carefully carving the top surface of the pot before the clay is fired with a needle or potter’s pin. It is a time intensive process which leaves no room for mistake.
 
The reference material used to create the composition ranges from ancient sculpture, Victorian paintings and even modern day gym wear advertisements. The intention is to create interesting and harmonious interactions between figures of differing shapes and sizes allowing them to tell their own stories that differ for every viewer.
